Carbon Air Filter
I’ve used this 3D Upfitters carbon filter on several machines because I filter all my printers. It’s a simple fan + activated carbon setup to help capture the nasties, but on this Printed Solid enclosure I needed a printed adapter to make the hole pattern work.
“all righty all right maybe this is gonna work here see what happens you're always the first one in there okay yep I have not done this in ages and the YouTube software has not improved one bit come on I guess I'll have to go to YouTube and watch it all right how's my voice working okay I can hear myself oh so you're flying are you actually in the air or are you actually uh at a layover all right scoot e one nice okay well since you're there I need you to is audio and video okay sounds good okay since you're the uh only viewer at the moment you can be the executive producer how's that is this going to cut off my head maybe yes no usually I'm always sitting okay sounds good good all right I'm trying to see how everything's set up I have not done this in three years how about that oh the bamboo lab machine is finished nice so the gist of uh what's going on now for uh what looks like both viewers oh well uh that's more than I would have had before so I've got uh this is a oh God if I start counting uh one two 3 four five six 7even 8 nine okay this is enclosure number 10 from printed solid um got a couple other ones but uh what I was going to do is I was going to put this one together tonight and it's usually not a difficult process uh I've learned the joys of using blue tape to hold things in place but uh let me uh switch over to the other camera so I've already gone through and outside of the uh the door I have removed all the plastic which is always the fun tedious part and uh so what we're going to do this is a cr10 style one and uh the next part of that will be once we get it together we have uh this is from 3D upfitters I've used this on several of the machines uh this is a carbon air filter I have to use an adapter to make it fit but essentially this captures all the nasties and then the other thing that I know is not popular but people everywhere insist you don't need these but I think your home insurance might disagree is uh this is the wham bam is the velcro piece here and this is what's called the cloud um the Sentry and this just velcro to the top of the enclosure so that if some sort of O crap moment happens uh there is a fire somehow by the just happens guys uh this would detonate and put a fire suppressant material all over the printer so that should help yeah I'd be really curious there's um you're mentioning um of course your proing machine and the enclosures uh one of the things that I saw is uh voxel uh they make pla they also make some small enclosures and they make a mod uh that uses the I ke Furniture to build an enclosure like the one you're talking about but uh but that yeah this is not a smoke detector this is a actual this is an actual suppression device um these go for 20 24 bucks and they're way cheaper than the blaze cut um which is the pressurized tubing uh that runs me about 125 bucks on each so so it's just the gist of what I'm tring trying to convey here to everyone is that for 20 bucks if by some bad luck your printer starts a fire um and this little guy can help put it out um if there's widespread damage or whatever and you have to speak to your home own's insurance at least you can say hey I made this effort I I had this device here um no one wants to talk about 3D printer fires I've been through a been through one and uh due to the uh GES I can't discuss it much but I can tell you that it was remarkably expensive and um the best analogy I can give people is it's like you don't understand folks that have elaborate burglar alarms unless you've been burglarized then you don't know why you never had it so anyway uh as I go through the uh parts and pieces here if you are new if you're in the chat looks like we got five viewers so hello I'm not a big Channel but I'm a fun Channel um I make content when I feel like it I don't chase the algorithm and um and I don't use shampoo so um yeah so I like to have a good time here so this is the other camera I have is my stream cam so I'm trying to have three cameras set up that will kind of do stuff in the background is my washing machine because it's laundry day so I apologize for how loud that is but the maid is out it's got to get done so we have all the hardware components I guess I should be polite and show you what this thing is so so let me do that and I'll switch over to my second Monitor and what we're putting together is the next gen safety enclosure for cr1 style printers this is the black one and 215 bucks and I know people cringe at the price of enclosures but by time you draw up your own files and pay someone to water jet these or CNC them it's way cheaper to buy someone else's product so uh my other recommendation is that I have two of the black ones and they are terrible to light up so uh I have the white ones and those are much easier to light up so there is that and the last part of this um I have it laying here somewhere is on the uh inside of this enclosure uh there is going to be an LED light on top so um that is that so let's move a few parts and pieces around and uh yes I can do that actually I don't know if I can even comment in my own chat how about that I gota gotta talk to the guy that runs this thing let's see there are slightly different volume levels and sound quality really that's interesting okay because I know I've done a lot of work on this one so let me fix that really quick on the primary camera we're at -7”
“8 and that one's the same and that one's the same so I don't know what's going on there there that's the beauty of free sauare thank you streamlabs OBS all right so here's our front door we're going to put that out of the way cuz I can assure you the cats are going to make an appearance wow I didn't realize how loud that washing machine was until I started a live [Applause] stream more pieces this is the bottom piece of the enclosure and if you're curious what printer is going to be uh going aside of this it's probably going to be one of my Aron thinkers um I displaced both of them for the uh a1s the bab La A1 machines and primary is louder the second in view much quieter interesting all right so I'm messing with your earbuds and hi there hi yeah I you know what I I I think you're in the way and if anyone hasn't met scooter he's a recent addition to the family and uh as all of my tuxedo cats are they are an extraordinary pain in the butt so Scooter World world scooter all right go teriz your sister okay now this right here on the side pieces this is the outlet now we have on each side so one of them uh we're just going to be blocking that off so we don't need to do both I also from voxel the FKS that make voxel PLA and ptg they also offer a uh yay it got quiet again they offer their own air filtration device so uh I ordered a couple of those so uh and that one has not only a HEPA filter but has activated carbon so we'll see how that goes you know I turn the cameras on and it's just nothing but noise so I've got piece number one I need to get my blue tape which is over here [Music] just checking the chat buffer see if I'm missing anything nope it's funny because as I look at the screen here on my uh streamlab do ask me if I want to sign into my chat well I naturally I do yes so anyway um you had asked about the wham bam link I can actually do that really quickly while I'm thinking of it let's go and you can also use uh where nerdy is cool 2022 I think it's WN i222 to save some money uh bam and here it is and of course the link is going to be something huge so let's shorten that up shall we let's do it this way okay and I'm going to drop that in the chat hopefully it will let me do that and I think we're good I didn't realize how white I was until I turned all these lights on and started filming oh wow let's get some of my toys out of the way so the cloud filter the cat hiding under this box Hardware FL okay what time is it it's 4:52 Eastern these are the [Applause] hinges all right sorting out the hardware is never the fun part but unnecessary evil this is where all those uh flow R test come in handy no yeah no I'm not really sporting a sunburn no actually we got some snow last night that was kind of a surprise yeah they uh all week long they were hyping up the potential of getting a storm and uh they only predicted scattered snow flurries which turned into four to six inches of snow I can assure you if they forecasted four to six in the snow we probably would have got nothing so okay so essentially uh we have these are like I think 25 millimet long screws these are the ones that are going to go um the way this whole enclosure works is that you have these little uh openings all through here parts are going to slide in and you're going to secure them in place with these M3s and it doesn't look like it would hold up really well but surprisingly it's it's done really great so I'm a fan of these I wish I had an affiliate link or even a coupon code where I could help folks save some money because I definitely encourage folks to print safe and the enclosure is a uh definitely a two-fold feature uh actually let's say take that back say three um first of all um you're going to get way better prints because you are controlling the environment that you are printing in um number two you're containing all the nasty voc's and off gasing which again no one likes to talk about but um if you look at the uh what was I thinking of CDC and EPA websites because I 3D print for a living in a research environment and those particles whether it's pla ptg nylon or others some are worse than others but all of them think of this like cigarette smoke doesn't matter if it's a cigar light cigarette Menthol all that secondhand smoke is bad for you so so with the Plastics what they're talking about is that uh it causes uh inflammation in the lungs and your cardiovascular system stuff that we really don't need to mess with all right well if you guys have watched my focal Tech videos I think that's the fastest I've gone through organizing Hardware ever if you're just tuning in we are going to put together an enclosure that came from printed solid it's a cr10 style so it's size to fit something that big uh right here now I'm gonna warn you this is going to be a little bit of a clown show watching me put this together so be prepared because it's big it's awkward and uh yeah so I'm starting this without any hair I won't be gaining any and let's see where should we start you know what I'm going to refer to the instructions briefly because and this is a one pager and this is what she'll look like when she's all done okay the panels can be attached using M32 volts and the square nuts use blue tape in other side it makes it much easier to assemble yes totally true okay start by attaching the bottom part D to side panel C okay oh my camera's making noises that's fantastic so let's take their advice this now what I'm going to do only because I've been through this a few times before is let me go to this camera here see these little uh grooves right here here and here so that's going to be where the screw is going to sit so I'm just going to put a little blue tape there so that when it's time I'll flip this over as well too it's time to place a screw there it will stay in place I say that now but live video sometimes has its own way proving me wrong three viewers wow it's a good thing I don't do this for a living but anyway I'm having fun so there ha in your face so if you're just tuning in I know keep saying that being hopeful um feel free to say hello there so we're gonna flip this over and that's not going to be a great camera shot if I'm covering the view is it okay so got to take note that I got the air vent here so I'm kind of working on the back and I'm gonna so the fun part is getting these into these little notches there there's Uno and sweet all and then we got the back piece over here nope wrong I was like where is the receptacle for that one and this is the back and you want to make sure see that small square in the corner that's where the power outlet is going to be so thinking ahead on that particular location where do I want the power cord to be probably want it to be over here so it'll be centered up with the other enclosure because they're going to sit side by side now here's where the fun begins I say with great sarcasm so I'm going to do this is when you wish you had a second set of hands but and d d d okay first part going in there's one clamps I don't think that would help you in this regard lined up I don't think I'll get this done in 15 minutes but okay one side is up other side and one of the things I like to do is kind of put you on the edge a little bit here you go oh the struggle is real now oh my God they actually lined up the first try so so next thing I'm going to do before I go messing with the bottoms of these things can I do these oh the chat buffer is Alive come on guys I know you're thinking you should be watching the playoffs not a sports guy my dad was a football referee basketball referee hockey umpire he did it all I've had my fell Sports there we go I'm trying not to talk to myself I'm starting to understand why bar Ross wasn't the way he was all right so this is secured on here and here now more fun I'll be right back sure um I'll be here okay one two three of these so what happens when you build walls is sometimes it's hard to see over them and sweet my shop has gotten rather cluttered over the last year or two so it's a little tough to get around here here let's move the camera a little bit we can see what's going on over here that blue tape makes a world of difference if you doing this by yourself without the blue tape trying to hold that nut in place would not be any fun okay you don't want to over torque anything see the nut popped out bugger that's what I want to [Music] sweet so what far away place is Caleb traveling to for my viewers Caleb is a longtime friend he also a fellow R2-D2 Builder and he's also a commercial airline pilot and and he'll have to share with us what exotic destination he's headed to next because I'm certain it's not Bangor where I am almost Tokyo do War wow hey it's starting look like an enclosure and you can start to see why that uh blue tape is so darn handy for lining these pieces up I'll keep these two pieces handy here uh these are side pieces which uh are covered up by these clear plates and generally these go on last because almost all of my printers are connected with octoprint so so I find that the hole here has to be widened out for the USB cable to fit in there but you can see back here we've included a good location for the power cord to escape so that looks decent um we also know that the air vent is going to be plugged in on the other side so while I can easily access this um let me turn that camera up a little bit higher that goes really smooth doesn't it so on the outside is uh this cover is going to go and that I think I better to do now so I can actually reach it because uh as you can tell once everything is enclosed accessing and reaching the back of this to attach the nuts will not be any fun ask me how I know as someone that has not planned ahead wow yeah you do have that traveling life good for you yeah I flew DCS last night but I didn't see any of our friends so I I just flew on the server and I think I was on the 40 ya Discord and uh that's always a mixed bag of enthusiastic foul mouth Youth and uh retirement age folks that we're used to but it's still fun let's see do I filter I filter all of my printers all of my printers are inside enclosures a couple years ago I thought I was having a bad case of seasonal allergies and it turned out uh to be environmental related noticed uh I was doing a fair amount of printing for I can't remember which project maybe was bb8 but anyway I had the printers going quite often and uh yeah just started to have a chronic sore throat and uh was uh you're know the throat guy was really great he's like it's got to be environmental he goes so started to add these enclosures on these printers and uh all that went away but the other plus was uh there was less opportunity for the cats to get that stuff because uh as you know personally they kind of take over that it's a great movie I feel really bad about uh Bruce w having a fasia all right let me to show you on the other side here with the my larg extrem cam never never never another L tech product so there we go we got that side buttoned up maybe a little hard to tell with the uh the lights so the next part of this is the top and let's go to here right so I'm G do this let's get that blue tape on top of those guys yeah I keep on watching my uh mail box I was promised a secondhand grassmaster wart H set up from one of our friends but they've made big promises before and haven't delivered but I was hoping this might be the one because that would be a great upgrade for my uh flight Sim setup okay let's move few things here because it's getting a little crowded pardon the but I love it when a plan comes together yes I you know everyone's raving about the 590 and it's easy to spend a lot of money on a flight Sim setup and they're really fun don't get me wrong but sometimes other priorities come up but we can live large through their Adventures think of it that way yeah I spent uh a good amount of time fine-tuning uh the setup on my headset line up a little I used still lot of friends of mine asking how come I'm not actively flying you know in the rental airplanes too freaking expensive right now well let's be honest and journal Aviation is always too expensive it's the only correct answer yeah yeah you're exactly right I mean you don't want to put yourself in the poor house for toys plus you just bought a house you have all kinds of stuff you got to get lawnmowers and based on the snowfall you got the other day may you a snowblower see don't know if I mentioned to you but we're in N at school is going to have a new website really soon the uh the let me fix this real quick before I caring on there yeah we had a WordPress site that basically just linked all the videos and most of my contacts have come through email but used to do websites back in the day and I always thought hey' be kind of fun to have the not only the videos but blogs and contact information and you know just other information and uh I put a feeler out the day say hey who do I know that's a web developer and spoke to one gentleman and he's really interested in 3D printing so he was like hey we should talk so great all right okay so I got the bottom here now I got to do the back pieces and can I do that without moving it because it sounds awful every time I move it if you're just tuning in I'm sorry I've neglected to do that a couple times here um we got adding here this is the next gen enclosure that I'm putting together right now and obviously this one is the white model and you definitely want the white model because I have two of the black ones and they're very difficult to illuminate so this is what I've got and you know a lot of people cringe at the price being 215 bucks but hey look by time you if you if you look around and find out what it cost for CNC time or water jet time buying the materials and using your own Design This is the best deal in town so I got this from printed solid and this is worked great the uh I'm sorry I should go to the other camera here here we go so it's coming together pretty nicely and we're about halfway done and after this we're going to work on getting the uh exhaust fan set up that's going to be on the outside on this side here one more square that one on this side I think the best way to do this is to walk around let me check okay what have I got YouTube says I have three viewers outstanding well hey I'd love to have more but I'll take what I got okay that back piece is going in pretty nicely and we're definitely going to pause on the top piece because I find it's way easier to put the duct work in without it on there uh I could put the front piece on but I need the top for that so let me move these Square nuts uh see I need to move to my other tab so I can see what you said nope I don't think I froze but we'll come back now here's where some more fun begins and this is from 3D upfitters essentially uh it breaks down to this is a 5vt USB power fan and in front of that fan is a large carbon a filter does not have hea that was one of the upgrades I inquired about but uh this just as example is way too big with that hole pattern on the outside so we have to attach an adapter and I just need to locate the ones that I printed there they are okay I printed these out on the uh bamboo Labs machine a bit ago and so what I need to do I need to get uh he didn't include it that's right I had to buy those M4 so what's going to happen is this adapter will be on the side I just have to make sure the holes on the outside here let's go to the other camera so we have a better angle of what I'm trying to do so let's do hickey lines up with that but it's the order of assembly because I can't attach this and then I won't have any way to yeah so has to go in first fun fun fun okay trying to remember my steps here so I think these are going to be long enough to reach without causing too much Dage other thing I picked up recently again I wish I could find locally but this was another Amazon purchase because the mcmas ones would have cost me an arm and a leg these are uh Square nuts oh this's wrapped in shrink WRA isn't it look got tape here here we go come on that's more Scotch tape good Lord clear tape on a clear cover equals joyous F so that's the only rub is if you do the 3D upfitter he no longer includes the adapter piece so he apologize for that okay M4 so has a nice little label of where these are uh see M4 and M3 are together looks like there was supposed to be a divider in there but it is not divided so we slide that guy in there and that's supposed to be a press fit oh yeah that's not going to burn us yep one already popped out I'm pretty sure we will never see that one again so a nice of a am I allowed to swear on my own channel so I have these guys sort of in place in this episode of Let's Make Paul cuss I try to be really good I really really really do uh let's see I think you're this size the one struggle I have with his design on these that there is a nut at the bottom that there's always one that's a little out two now I'm kind of debating putting a little tab of blue tape just to keep those guys in there I don't think it's gonna hurt the fan any but I just don't want those small screws coming out of place so I'm just GNA just going to put them the side just so it can't escape the channel it won't bother the air flow not that 30 CFM is a real wizard anyway so what I've done is I've just put that blue tape so that those screws cannot slide out and then I have this one last one and I think don't get me wrong I can get by with only three but sounds like I might grab and this has been my only complaint with this device I have mentioned that that's been a problem on nine of these he tells me no one ever complained I can see can see that so what in there my kids family rating I didn't know I had one wow I've made it this far along to be held up by a stupid M4 nut well I guess I can live without it son of a okay next step this thing has to be held in place with the m4s and I think this size is gonna be fine and one of my favorite little tools is this guy so not only can I drill the hole but but I can also thread it at the same time I mean we're dealing with 6 mm maybe 8 mm so it's not like we're going to get many threads out of that so weing for in the drill let get this guy and we're just going to go ahead and and you can actually see the threading but not worried about that but what I like is that gives there we go it gives it you know something else to bite into so that's that's schol so the uh material this is a ACM aluminum composite material so very thin piece of aluminum on each side with plastic in the middle so I do this stff the sign board sweet so there is that okay you can't hear me at all well at least on that camera angle okay well that's supposed to be using let's check all right okay so that was on the stream no that was on the Canon let's go to the uh the can should not yeah the Canon should not be using any uh audio this is better on this camera okay it's exact same setting so I I honestly don't know what to tell you um and the stream cam yeah so they all they all have identical settings so if you're confused so am I me too [Music] and oh the stream cam okay hang on this guy stream cam is The Quiet One yeah they are all set to use the exact same audio so I I don't know maybe this is why I don't do this that often and oh look hi I know everywhere I go you go what time is it 5:30 yeah you're good boy so back over here scooter want attention I know right unusual okay so all right so I just up the I up the sound okay that's threading on pretty nicely and I up the sound so maybe that's better oh what did I do let's see it's funny is the one is that little a bit better okay cool and uh okay so I need to find the uh oh no no no no no dude D dude o buddy you're kind of in the way all right well um your Mac's out on your laptop okay all right um I need is missing allen wrench and I know you think you're pretty darn cute let's see doesn't it just figure the one allen wrench I'm missing is the one I really really really need no no no hey bud hey bud hey bud come here come here come me here buddy I know I know I know have you seen the Allen wrench um like that's a bit of a mess here all right um here I'm gonna uh sorry bud wish I could fly okay there we go and oh wow all kinds of candy here I need to give that away I'm not I like my teeth and all right back at it so these two are threading in nice I just can't find their stupid Allan I have more 23 printers every printer came with some sort of Allen wrench or something hey I just found it how about that I threaten to go find another part all right yea so can you imagine putting this together with the uh on I've done it a couple times and I've just it's not enjoyable the other thing I'm going to do is uh the back piece I'll put that window in all right let's get this out of the way so for anyone scoring from home the magic size was M4 by 14 millimeter for these guys you don't have to thread into this but boy it sure makes it easy like a pain wither without the roof well there's a lot to be said about that true okay you think this is bad wait you see the lighting at least at least the fire suppression device is just a decal for the most part yeah I have both bamboo LS machines inside these I love it okay the nice thing is these all lined up really well I was afraid that one wouldn't and it would push it out but no looks like we're good my tippy toes here to see well I say that the bottom ones aren't perfectly lined up okay scoot how you doing yeah that's my little helper there for you and if you're wondering yep he's like that 247 H which one okay back to the fun over here so one of the nice things is I was able to look inside of here and I could see that it was catching the nut and and going through so for whatever reason I was a little a little skew so that's fine so I got three in there uh do I want to be perfect do I want to get that last one in there sure and trash can and this was the spare one in case I fudge up now with three lined up that should that should be okay okay that pulls that all in so that's a nice seal nice and let's see what Caleb is saying sorry I'm a little uh the length of that screw um yeah those were M4 by 10 mm probably could get by with eight I can see where it's going through so that's good uh next up I can actually pull some of the tape off of this stuff next thing we're g to Pivot this thing around and we're gonna do the back window and I'm going to clean up my mess here just a little bit this was a uh a Harbor Freight find of all things so just never know uh as far as what the brand is I don't know I just know that I bought this in 2016 and it's been super handy um I don't know how your community is but trying to find any metric is just remarkably hard all right put that over there put these Allen wrenches over here [Music] okay the windows you want with just the small screws I think these are 10 mm memory serves I remember printing this back in the fuler tech days a little screw gauge that very quickly can tell me what it is it is a 10 very handy Gadget to have yes that's a very good point you make about Harbor Freight that's something I've mentioned to people actually I would tell people that back when I worked at Sears of all things people would mention uh oh I'm looking for this tool but it costs so much money over here it's like are you going to use it once or are you going to use it multiple times oh it would probably just be a one and only go to Harbor Freight go get it because uh just don't expect that Harbor Freight device to to work for long cuz they're just super cheap so yeah being able to just reach over the top here and just put these in is way easier than what I've done in the past as I've gotten excited and put this all together and then next thing I know I'm sticking blue tape on the top of the screws hoping that the nuts as I spin them on from inside are going to hold sometimes I Am My Own Worst Enemy yeah I ran into that with a Pneumatic tools when I was doing R2D2 skins and I was doing it with the uh there we go I had a Pneumatic uh airsa look like a little lightsaber just a little saber saw and it was great but this time I went to go to use it on the second R2-D2 it the valves were just gone I plugged the air into it and just started hissing like oh that one's dead reciprocating saw that's the work I'm trying to find yeah I went to one of the uh R2 builders get togethers and one of the guys was really all about air tools and I was a very nervous R2 Builder because you know especially if you go to the aluminum R you're paying a lot of money for these very expensive pieces that you're going to piece together with other parts and last thing you want to do is drill the wrong hole tap the wrong hole you know have it be off whatever and with an air tool or any kind of you know motion tool you can do damage much faster than by hand okay so we have a window honestly I've never found that this is very useful for much uh but I like the fact that it's there if I need it because I think I had on one printer all of my machines I feed filament from the top using filament dryers and I'll use the dry boxes although the filament dryers have come down in price so much that it's just way easier just to use those but anyway uh I think I had one machine I might have been the er20 from Aron it was so small it was easier to feed the filament through the back panel so we've made some progress Let's Line you up over there all right so this next part I will not lie is going to suck because it's just the agronomics of putting that top piece in and one of the things I'm going to do before we get too carried away is I'm gonna get the blue tape out because what's going to happen is this connects and we have to go from the outside to feed in the uh screw and of course the nut is inside here so you can imagine by yourself trying to hold that nut just would be totally maddening and I use a long enough piece of tape so that when it's time to remove this stuff it comes off fairly easy oh let's let's change your angle here I don't if it's any better with the cannon but here we go the cannon this is a uh t7i it doesn't do clean HDMI on the output if you're doing streaming or stuff like that it insists on putting a box around everything which is kind of a short sight of the t7i or t7 series anyway but for $5 a month you can use the EOS webcam software which will turn your high resolution camera into a lousy 1080 by P video but it works and t7 used to be my primary camera in all my videos and I decided to go over to the Sony and the Sony does some better resolution but the color palette is way worse so when I'm videos I have to use all that color correction which kind of doubles the time to do the videos there we go it can be a little frustrating I mean YouTube was such a profitable Enterprise for me but it is what it is okay let me look at the chat uh how many were built when you started I2 how many built r2s did we have I would say under a hundred yeah because I started in 2003 because I had seen I think it was Alex Kung had built his R2 and I think he I think he was a gr I think he was a Weber gr for the Dome and you know it's funny because I looked at his AR and thought oh wow we that is so cool and then a year later as I've seen other people builds other people's builds rather I'm just like oh wow that was such a crappy build compared to some of these other guys I don't mean that to be mean but I was just like you know once you get into a hobby and start seeing more and more builds and how they've been done you're just blown away by it I'm still fascinated by the 3D printed r2s I would still love to do one but I would I would never expected to be much more than a static build you know just sitting around the house and did I mention this is not the fun part all right so I got most everybody lined up except the one piece in the back come on you oh I really want to swear I really like my colorful metaphors okay you're almost lined up there we go so what we're doing is we're trying to notch everybody in and it looks like Oh by the power of gray skull so the secret here is going to be once the fun part is once you lock down one side things get way easier you just got to get there yeah the thing with building an R2 is you know when I first got mine done I just couldn't wait to start oh the big thing is and I think maybe your experience May mirror mine is once you got it up and running and moving your confidence just goes way up when you're building this thing you're just real nervous about oh God is this going to look right how is this going to work there we go but uh yeah after I had mine built back in 2009 and Halloween was my first outing had it out there and then after that I was like oh I can't wait to add all these gizmos now and there were so many other people especially the California guys I mean they're just they're always way ahead of the curve anyway but there was a lot of cool things people were doing the life form scanner it's it was a really interesting time to get in when I started building because it was you didn't have 3D printers and stuff like that that was all everything was all either styrene wood and there was a little bit of uh competitiveness you know between the oh you're just wasting your money with aluminum a styring will never be rugged or whatever there we go trying to get some more these top pieces to line up it's one thing to line up the Naches but there's about two millimeters of back and forth to get that hole to line up with exactly where it needs to be yeah I I had troubles with that individual because up until recently he made a carbon copy of my data panel and he was very Unapologetic about it I was like dude really I mean can I have one thing I think it was around there recently too yeah here we go I think I had written him and said you know I'd appreciate if you didn't copy my part I know this is the R2 Builders Group and we all like to innovate but yours is a complete carbon copy of of mine and I know uh you sell a very expensive frame in 232 kit and I know you put a lot of time and development in that and if someone copied yours work without credit or acknowledgement I think you'd be a little ticked off too now granted mine's a $60 part versus this several $0000 one but you know play nice I guess the only it's funny we're talking about Star Wars stuff here in this build that's fine um I guess the only one that's kind of frustrated me is the uh the bb8 you know there's not a lot of Open Designs you know if you want frames or Rings or parts or whatever you that person has made it clear that they are the only source and you will pay that price so we are doing really really well we we have a box I'm just double check them and make sure I haven't missed any connectors here but so far so good if you're just joining in and wondering what in the devil are we doing what are we talking about we're putting together a printed solid cr10 style next gen enclosure this is going to house one of my 3D printers and uh $215 product I don't have a coupon code or affiliate link to save you any money or make any money but this is what it is enclosures are very good for 3D printers not only do they control the environment so you get better Prints but you're protecting it from you know what I think I was starting to give the three reasons why I like enclosures and we just kind of went off onto a tangent I know it's not that I'm chatty right but anyway yeah so anyway you can control the environment so you're not get any drafts and stuff like that and with this uh fan on the side there that's going to pull the air up and out and of course you're keeping the paws out and then you can uh you know contain the nasties you're probably wondering or if not let me Enlighten you so on the inside here we have these air intakes I know a lot of people when they've seen my enclosures they're like don't you want to seal that up I mean I would think you know you want it airtight the answer is no what you want to do is you want to pull air from outside in so it's negative pressure and what's going on is if the printer has the electronics on the inside you know like my cr10s have the control box on the outside so it's not as big a factor but anyway so you have the printer on the inside and what's going on is you're pulling in the air from the outside and of course we're heating it with 3D printing and we're releasing all these voc's and ultrafine particles as part of melting the polymer plastic and as it goes up uh it's going to get pulled in by this air filter and that carbon air filter uh carbon has a huge surface area so it's going to grab those particles uh and then vent into the uh here in the basement uh where there are two other air filters so we're working on making sure that it's a healthy environment po you know this camera angle I look like a fat bastard or maybe I am and I'm just in denial but anyway so there is that so that's why we have those gaps and the next step of this I'm gonna throw this on here just for Giggles there's the top cover now this is definitely thin enough where actually let's use a prop this is small enough so that for example from my this is a piece of bowed and tubing so that can uh go through here so what I do is with the filament dryer up top I run from the filament dryer the bow and tubing so it will go right through here and feed into the printer because it's one thing that control the environment here it's one thing that control the environment in your filament people are always curious about why filament dryers I've never had any issues well been lucky I can tell you that uh in the large scale world when we're dealing with hundreds and thousands of pounds of pellets of plastic uh those do go through Hoppers and they are dried for the recommended duration and time that the manufacturer States and then we uh those are vacuum fed into the hot end of the large scale printer whether it be our Master print or the new world's largest 3D printer that we have over there but uh so my point is if it's important for a multi-million dollar machine it's just as important because those chopped up pellets are are the same thing as your uh as your filament so and I found uh especially here in where our humidity is all over the place right now it's about 22% humidity but during the summer it gets pretty humid over here but uh if you have damp filament you know you may see some stringing or hairs or stuff like that in your 3D prints and it can drive you Bonkers trying to well you know is my retraction speed is it my attraction distance is it the temperature what's going on and sometimes just as simple as you got moisture in your material and the other thing that uh you know people don't like to believe is that you know we know that ptg can be very hygroscopic as can nylon but so is pla the other thing is that a lot of these materials you know just your pla for example I mean you may find that the colorant they use for red or the say for example like with white they use titanium yide quite a bit you know and plus whatever Secret Sauce they have in there if it's like a silk pla they'll probably have some TPU because that's what silk uses to get those smooth lines but uh that can also be affected by moisture so anyway if you're going to spend all that money for great material try it so the moon roof is on uh I don't know if so I got that on there uh let's see let me look in the uh I think it say I have three viewers and I think unfortunately I'm one of them by being logged on to the other one um now I need to grab the lighting so this is our LED light bar and uh we do have some grooves here now they included some wood screw like things and uh I'm not going to use those because uh those are going to stick up the top and they're going to be very very sharp and I don't want to gouge myself again again falls under ask me how I know um I do want to test this light real quick because it would suck to go through the process for inst calling it and discovering it doesn't work I have an outlet over here to go check and this was a Pur from Lowe's oh yeah okay now all I can see is a vertical line of purple so that's pretty bright oh you might be two of them hey you're pumping up my numbers how about that that's fine so the next thing we got to do so the one thing as we get ready to install the light I have already picked up an extension cord there is that now the other thing that I you know I just had a little aha moment and sometimes these things happen during live streams so typically what I would do with this I me move everything a little bit closer oh really like that so light's going to be up here and power cable is going to be both for the printer and for this but on the other hand up top here I have a opening and I wonder I mean I can always add this later but I bet I could take some TPU and make like an air grommet you know where where it comes together like a t and that power cable could go right through the top maybe not need extension cord I'll have to draw that up in solid works anyway the next thing I want to do is I want to figure out what size screw that's GNA fit I wonder if that's going to be our M4 again now M4 would do it but it's not [Music] happily surprisingly M3 would do it I'm just looking of these you know they put these decals right over the opening all right let's see yeah that's the M4 went in they would never come out so M4 is out but this is where I'm glad I buy those big multi packs you're watching uh that movie multi pass Fifth Element yeah M3 would fit okay that's not the worst idea so then the next part becomes G sit up top like that how far are those holes apart MTI such a good movie all right looks these holes are exactly six inches apart I use packing material a jig here how far do I want you away from that and here's where it all falls apart trying to make this work right I haven't seen the sequel to Independence Day okay so I think you're six in Long's all right so I have made two holes up there this beautiful metric drill bit kit uh let's go with M3 let's see how much I can screw this up so for the next part so usually I wouldn't have done starting h but gu the light's going to hang from that now I'm going to use the tap so now one is threaded now the next question is g to be yeah these screws going to be long enough yeah that hold okay first a screw up that hole is too big should have used the uh yeah just way that worked out a't that funny this has happened before it's not that big a deal so what I've done in the past is I've had to get the junk out of there I think I'm G do is just that a couple turns because you want want a little bit of the you want a little bit of the uh the head hanging down got thing in this pack I also uh these are uh Phil Up's heads so they're a little bit bigger on the pan head yeah I watched um one of my favorites is uh Thor Ragnarok I haven't watched the one with uh him and uh Natalie Portman she plays I guess Mrs B or whatever I'm not quite sure how that all worked out anyway let's see how close I came here's where the fun okay so I notched in there and then what I do is I tighten up these screws to kind of pull it tight of course those screws are going to just sit there and spin a bit that's okay can oh I got these giant twist ties but I don't want SC going crazy for them not usually a fan of extension cords but this gets us over the hump excuse me everything else on here everything that's plugged in here is going to be plugged into a UPS backup Tada doesn't look too bad and ironically my measurements were SWAT on so who knows working with these Engineers every day I guess it's rubed off on me maybe a little let's put that away 62 for so we've been at this for about two hours let there be light nice little quote from Genesis get some stuff out of the way real quick now we need to put on the front piece then the door and then we're done for a little while okay pencil Square nuts that actually came in handy yeah so at the moment we uh have light have an air filter these side pieces uh I think I dude on this side here we'll secure this one I think I'll do that real quick here pardon my sh head here what is for suppar tonight I haven't thought that far ahead three viewers H the algorithm is tough this is more of a test run anyway we haven't done a lot of the i't build videos in a long time I still remember we did the ft6 and couple other builds and actually got a lot of nice comments about that a while back from someone was like you know because I know you're not a big YouTuber but I really enjoyed that it was a lot of fun watching you guys do that so the reason I'm doing this side is I know that the printer doesn't have any cables going out this side so essentially this enclosure is going to be flushed with another one on this side that's why everything for outside axis is going to be on the right so if you're wondering why I'm doing one and not the other that's why the only other thing I would do off camera is um on the side I will be attaching the uh the Octo print server there has R High on one hand these Square nuts are a little easier to grab we go all right we have tape we're going to put a little bit more tape because we're going to do the door so I need to get some tape here on these sides got some there some here yeah so it seems like with 3D printing blue tape is just essential the um one thing I was going to point out with this a little bit my other enclosures what I had done is on the uh inside of this door frame I used LED strips and unfortunately as the enclosures would heat up um I would notice over time that uh it was always U coming off peeling off so I was like well that's no fun and uh I did like that they I did like the overhead light was a little easier with the viewing with octoprint when I was monitoring these guys that lightness worked out better oh really come on you lined up there it is nice all right I want to still wiggling around I guess grabbing nuts sounds funny if you're just entering the room huh and there's one shortcoming I can think of with this uh door panel is that uh on the front is where our hygrometer goes it's one of these this is one that's died after a couple years of use but um I've learned not to fully seat them in there because when the batteries die um you can't wiggle your head in there to get those batteries out and change them and if you had to pull it back out it is so stuck on the the lip of this it's not an enjoyable experience it's another opportunity to expand your vocabulary one is in there for and then I need to yeah you figure these inclosures are it's phenomenal the amount of money I spent on safety in here but honestly I don't have any regrets about it because it really giv pays off in dividends when you're doing multi-day prints and they you just I don't have to worry about some of the environmental stuff was draft what one less thing to worry about then there's that whole uh you know there's something it was poof at least you want to tell the insurance company is I did everything in my power to battle this fire at the local level just in case I can tell you for experience you ever have to sit in an investigation for a major fire it's not fine we're almost done these are the front door we just got to peel that paper off and hang the door oh I meant to ask you if you're still viewing or not but um that new Star Wars series that Victor and those guys have working on I haven't had a chance to watch that is it how is that is that worth a watch Skeleton Crew I think it's called just been wondering because some of these spin-offs that Disney has done they've just learned the magic of sucking the fun out of things I'm still amazed at the rebels now the girl that gets lightsaber to the abdomen and she's up and walking the next day that's like for real qu G got a bad deal but D door frames in nice all right this is the remaining piece for the outside um I think their hygrometer last time was in Celsius nope this one's uh and goes here and actually it's fitting in there very Loosely so I'm I'm pretty pleased with that yay uh my uh little assistant has given up scoot what you doing took my spot okay who's that I gotta say he's a great cat I uh thought he'd be very independent and do his own thing but nope he is glued to my side where I go he goes okay we have these two spacer pieces looks like it has a little bit Force healing is real oh my blog yeah you know I used to get emails from uh I'm trying to remember uh someone there was a couple uh I think it was from Google saying hey we'd like to uh update the format so works better on mobile platforms so I said sure go for it and it's surprised me because again I live in the boonies of Maine here but some of the uh events I've gone to or school things I've been invited to go to um you know the kids would come up saying oh yeah the teacher gave us the link to your blog and we were reading all the trials and tribulations you went through you know and when you broke the frame and replacing it and all the experimentation and software programing you did I thought that was pretty cool yeah Victor Franco really inspired me with that process he uh he had a great blog especially when he uh built a second one he was doing a second one but the same time I was doing mine or upgrading mine and he's such a nice guy hello introp welcome I didn't know we had some additional people here yeah cardboard foil oh God just be careful I again I don't mean to scare people but the fire danger is real and it's not much fun being part of a postfire investigation I'm sitting with a Fire Marshall and explaining you did what so but no hey welcome mean yeah as your rather grew up as military Moxy I have to be honest with you I do not have any love for that stuff that's fantastic nice to meet you welcome aboard um don't know how long you've been watching but I feel compelled to say that yeah this is a uh pretty solid enclosure and actually I can uh hit the monitor here so this is what I'm putting together uh I have 10 of these and I have 23 machines um most of them are in these these type of enclosures are other custom ones um obviously this one's white don't buy the black one I have two of those and they make it really really hard uh you can put all the lights you want in there it's it's it's pretty dark so and uh that's my booty nice uh but yeah just got it together I got the lights installed inside here and uh on the cannon here I point the camera up these are not expensive Parts this year you aware that is a 3D upfitter carbon air filter it's USB powered um so essentially the way the whole system works is we have these air air gaps here it's at negative pressure so essentially you know uh you know the 3D printer is up and running we got it all closed in uh so people worry about them overheating but it's pulling it's pulling cooler from outside and as the printer is running you know uh heat rises it's going to go to the back corner here and that is going to pull into the carbonet filter filter out the nasties and uh and all is well but yeah Moxy oh boy that's not not one of my favorites did I sell my second r2d too yes I did I was feeling good about myself in the gym today and this side profile is killing me oh well I'm work working on it yeah second R2D2 was sold many years ago um guy had a class where he was uh they wanted to do it as a build project and then I guess uh something happened and then he was asking if I wanted to buy it back and I'm like nope nope nope it's yours okay I have to find some missing Hardware because I had all the screws except now we did watch in the video where they did give us the screws for the uh small ones but I don't see any of the big ones for the doors that's funny yeah I'm just thinking that as you watch me put together all the hardware I didn't see that as part of the package that's kind of hilarious I mean I think I have some stuff that would work but yeah I don't recall seeing anywhere in the packaging material the large stuff a temper to control the closure I don't know so let's see if I have some leftover Hardware here that will work all right I have fortunately some of my own Hardware that will work here wow M5 do I have a lot of M5 screws loudest furnace ever I might be unlock I have some M5 stuff all right so they were supposed to enclose a bunch of uh m616 bolts and M6 nuts I don't have any M6 stuff that I'm aware of yeah I know oh M5 is as big as I go those are 12 I really need 16 and by the grace of God I have some that's incredible that they didn't include that but when we sorted out the hardware that was all we saw how funny so there's one how do you like that Neptune I uh there was a guy Loc the bought the four and he loved that one then he had issues with the four and then he was like nope don't get the four stick with the three and I was like well I got too many printers as it is so I'm not going with anything at the moment because uh believe the four is the one that runs Clipper if I recall correctly you can correct me if I'm wrong oh yeah direct drive is really the way to go yep totally yeah every machine I have has been converted over I just won't go back the uh I I did the ls bot and uh what I do with that thing uh LSB I put a bondtech and a what they call the m175 with which is the 1”
