The energy and welcome I received from the Jamaican diaspora in Brixton inspired me. The music, food and vibes are unmissable. However, Jamaica has some serious warnings about travel to the Island. Plagued by gang violence and crime for many decades, many parts of Jamaica are no-go zones for locals and tourists alike. One such area is the Flankers garrison in Montego Bay, which is where my Jamaican trip started. Many locals warned me to not enter Flankers. Despite these warnings, I was convinced that I could gain access to the community and find out about life there and some positive aspects. This is my journey into Flankers, starting with a visit to downtown Montego Bay, away from the tourists and where the locals live.
