The South Wales Valleys is an industrialised area that played a significant role in the growth of industrial Britain through its exploitation of its verdant coal, steel and iron resources. Sparsely inhabited until the mid 19th century, communities were established throughout the area to service the abundant need for labour. Many of the towns in the area relied upon a small collection of significant employers to sustain the prosperity of their inhabitants. As mining and steelworks closed towards the end of the 20th century, much deprivation inevitably followed. Today, the valleys are a collection of seemingly forgotten yet once thriving towns. Those that have not left to find work elsewhere struggle to find gainful employment.. life is a struggle for many. Those that are left behind in the valleys are kind and warm-hearted people who are proud of their industrial heritage. The economic prosperity of the region may be consigned to the past but the strong community values and culture remain.
