Lebanon Ceasefire: Status and Prospects of the Israel-Hezbollah Truce

Forty-seven days since a U.S.-brokered ceasefire paused the Hezbollah-Israel war, the tenuous agreement holds. By day 60, the Lebanese Armed Forces should be deployed to the south, dismantling Hezbollah’s military infrastructure as Israel withdraws its remaining troops. How is the ceasefire working so far? Will Israel and Lebanon meet their obligations going forward? And how might Hezbollah respond if the LAF and Lebanese government proactively target its assets south of the Litani River? To discuss these questions, The Washington Institute is pleased to announce a virtual Policy Forum consisting of two separate, sequential video conversations: the first with Gen. Khalil Helou (LAF, Ret.), and the second with Maj. Gen. Tal Kelman (IDF, Ret.) and Institute fellow Hanin Ghaddar. Both panels will be moderated by Taube Senior Fellow David Schenker. Khalil Helou formerly served as a general in the LAF Rangers Regiment and the military intelligence hostage rescue force. Currently, he is an associate professor and researcher at Saint Joseph University of Beirut and chairman of the “Lebanese National Convention,” an organization that aims to implement the rule of law and secure state sovereignty. Tal Kelman formerly served as head of strategy and the Iran Directorate at the Israel Defense Forces Strategic Planning and Cooperation Directorate (J5), head of the Strategic Division, and Air Force chief of staff. Hanin Ghaddar is the Friedmann Senior Fellow at The Washington Institute and author of its incisive Lebanon papers “Roadmap to an Enduring Ceasefire” and “Hezbollahland: Mapping Dahiya and the Shia Community.”
