The several-kilometer-long canal park was designed by the 19th-century landscape architect Jan David Zocher jr. With a few exceptions, the centuries-old city defensive wall surrounding Utrecht Old Town was demolished. A large part of the vacant space was subsequently used for the construction of the park.
