Instagram HACKED: How I got my dog's account back

Having a pet account (or a faceless Instagram account) can be challenging to recover if you aren't paying for Meta Verified. I fell for a phishing email claiming someone made a copyright strike against me and threatening the suspension of my account, and I foolishly clicked on the link the email without checking if it was a legitimate link. I don't recall exactly what I did, but I at a minimum when I tried to "log in" (likely to a hacker controlled page that looked like Instagram) I used my 2FA code, worst case I also gave them my password. That was enough for them to take control of the account. Within seconds they 1. Turned off my 2FA and replace it with their own 2. Changed my email 3. Changed my password 4. Changed my phone number 5. Deleted my backup codes 6. Disconnected the Instagram from my Facebook Accounts Center Because they turned off MY 2FA I had no means to reset my password. Every time it asked for the security code it failed because they disabled it and replaced it with their own. The only 3 ways to get your account back if all other recovery methods fail (password reset, getting a link to recover the account) is to 1. Chat with Instagram support via Meta Verified = I wasn't paying for it so that was out 2. Submit a selfie video – when you have a pet account (or a faceless account) this is tough because your face likely only shows sporadically in reels / posts. Unless an actual human is comparing your selfie and going through your feed looking for a match this may not work, and it didn't work for me 3. Request help from friends – this is a newer option that was available to me, and this took 3 attempts but did finally work. However, I explain in the video what the challenges are with this method. It is not perfect but better than nothing! If you don't see the "request help from friends" I suggest trying to uninstall and reinstall Instagram. I saw it when trying to recover Waffles' account, but the last 2 weeks I have been playing with an old Instagram account trying to recreate the recovery steps and I don't see it with that account. It may be 'account' based, I am not sure. But worth a try.

About This Video

Two weeks ago, my Instagram got hacked and, yes, I’m still side-eyeing myself for it. I fell for a phishing email that screamed urgency—copyright strike, possible suspension, click-now energy. I make my own original content, so my curiosity got me, and I clicked the link without checking if it was legit. Somewhere in that mess I entered my 2FA code (and worst case, maybe my password), and within seconds I was logged out while the hacker went full chaos mode: they changed my email, password, and phone number, disabled my 2FA and replaced it with theirs, deleted my backup codes, and disconnected my Instagram from Facebook Accounts Center. In the video, I walk through why “but I had two-factor on!” didn’t save me this time, and what recovery actually looks like when you run a pet account (aka: my face isn’t in every Reel). I tried the selfie video option over and over—like a dozen times—and kept getting “couldn’t be confirmed.” What finally worked was Instagram’s “request help from friends” recovery path, but it took three attempts and a lot of awkward convincing because you can’t choose any friend—you get a random list Instagram suggests. My biggest takeaway: stop clicking links in emails, and if you don’t see the friends option, try uninstalling and reinstalling Instagram.
