Today I ran the test that actually matters: a $19 black oxide step bit versus a $70 Spyder “MC blue” step bit, in real metal, with real drilling. I don’t care about marketing claims—I care what happens when you’re actually making holes. I set it up to answer three questions: is the Spyder worth the extra money, does it start where you want (or does it walk), and what happens when you stop babying the bit and heat builds up. On the drill press speed test (five 1/2" holes each), Spyder ran way cooler on the first hole (79°F vs 120°F) and averaged 4.69 seconds per hole versus 12.43 seconds for the black oxide—about 2.6x faster. Then I did a walking/placement test, and this is where the cheap bit hurt itself: even with a punched witness mark, it still walked, while Spyder didn’t walk with or without a punch. Finally, I did a rapid-fire 15-hole test with an impact driver and thermal camera. Time was basically a tie, but heat wasn’t: 228°F on the black oxide vs 145°F on the Spyder, and heat is what eats edges. Verdict: if you drill metal once in a blue moon and don’t care if the hole is perfect, the cheap bit can be fine. If you care about speed, cooler cutting, and especially starting clean without walking, Spyder is doing something meaningfully different.
