About This Video

In this video, I’m showing you how I tuned and cleaned up my son Arian Lee’s vocals in Logic Pro X using Logic’s own pitch correction (basically Logic’s version of Auto-Tune). A lot of y’all remember that tutorial from four or five years ago, and you were blown away by his voice—well, the song is finally recorded now that he’s 14, and I wanted to walk you through what I did on the lead vocal. I even A/B the vocal with the pitch correction off and on, because honestly, he doesn’t “need” it—he can sing—but I like to use pitch correction to clean things up and go for a perfect take. I set the root note to F and used a natural minor scale, then I showed how the response setting changes the vibe: low response gets more robotic, higher response stays more human. After that, I kept the rest of the chain simple: EQ with a low roll-off around 216 Hz to keep the vocal from clashing with the beat, a top roll-off around 13 kHz to avoid harshness, and a small boost around 3.6 kHz for presence. Then I added light compression for balance, a noise gate to kill background noise between lines, a touch of ensemble (chorus) at about 6% for width, and a de-esser to control the “S” sounds—plus a little reverb and light delay to finish the mix.
