When I first started making these 3 tier planters, I was getting glue squeeze out on the sides of the planter boxes, so my quick fix was to set the planter boxes on side supports and just glue the bottom to the support and brad nail the sides. This has now evolved into having a bottom shelf for storage. Dimensions, cuts and stuff: Everything is made with standard 6 foot cedar pickets. I sand with 40 grit with the hand sander, then 100 grit on the belt sander. Boxes: 16 inches X3 and 5 inches X2 each. You should be able to get all 3 boxes out of 2 and a half pickets. The 5 inch pieces sit on top of the bottom piece, grain up, then the remaining 16 inch ones get tacked to the sides. The Frame: This is a 30 inch tall planter. The straight leg is 30 inches. The angled leg has matching 30 degree cuts on the top and bottom, and will measure 34 5/8th inches each. Use a 30 degree cut of scrap to line up your angles. Tack the top box first, then lay it on it's side. My Measurements for the Side Supports: This should give you about 5 inches from the bottom of the top planter to the top of the planter beneath it: Measured on the straight leg: Bottom of the leg to the top of the supports: Bottom: 3 7/16 inches Middle: 14 1/16 inches. (you can probably round this down) Square your lines, measure across, and cut a piece with one 30 degree end that will match the front leg. Do this for both sides. (I only really measure on the second side, to make sure it matches the first side.) Final assembly: Middle first, Dry fit so that the back, top corner of the planter lines up with the back edge of the front support. Glue only on the support rail, slide the planter into place and tack on the sides. Repeat for bottom planter. The shelf is just tacking 16 inch pieces across the bottom support, you will have to rip the last one to fit.
