On a backpacking trip to Europe in 2009, Tortuga co-founders Fred Perrotta and Jeremy Michael Cohen learned that most luggage is ill-suited for city travel. They couldn’t find the perfect luggage for city travel, so they made it. Today, Tortuga is a 100% remote team on a mission to make travel easier and more enjoyable. About This Video

An uncomfortable backpack can ruin your trip, so in this video I walk you through exactly how I fit the Outbreaker Backpack so it carries comfortably—more like a hiking pack—even when you’re navigating a city. The big goal is simple: save your shoulders by using the hip belt correctly so you can transfer about 80% of the pack’s weight from your shoulders to your hips. When the belt is dialed in, your stronger leg muscles do the work instead of your neck and shoulders. I start by showing you how to measure your torso length along your spine with a soft tape measure (it’s easiest with a friend). You find the vertebra that sticks out at the top of your spine, then measure down to the “shelf” you make with your hands on top of your hip bones. Once you have that number, I explain how to adjust the Outbreaker’s suspension system: unlock the Velcro tab, choose the webbing loop closest to your torso length (if you’re between sizes, round down), and reattach the shoulder straps through that loop and three loops above it. Finally, I load the pack with some weight and fine-tune everything: hip belt on your hip bone, shoulder straps down and back, load lifters forward, and the sternum strap set to a comfortable height so the shoulder straps don’t pull back.
