Kidney issues can be acute (often from toxin ingestion like antifreeze or certain chemicals) or chronic (more common in older dogs and slower to show up). Either way, diet is one of the most crucial parts of treatment, and I always recommend you work closely with your veterinarian because every dog’s needs and portion sizes will be different. I cover the evidence-based basics: reducing phosphorus to take stress off the kidneys, keeping sodium lower (but never cutting it out suddenly), and encouraging hydration with clean water available at all times—ideally purified or distilled. I also talk about the protein “debate” and why most dogs do best with moderate, high-quality protein (not extremely low unless they’re uremic), plus smart calories from fat (especially omega-3s) and carbs (often up to about 50%) to help maintain weight. Finally, I share practical food ideas—like fattier meats, low-salt cottage or ricotta, yogurt, kidney-friendlier fruits and veggies, and low-phosphorus options like white rice and pasta—plus what to avoid, including high-salt foods, vegetable oils high in omega-6, cod liver oil, and especially bones as kidney disease progresses.
