Rode Video Micro 2

I installed the Rode VideoMicro II on the M50 and it’s been fantastic for wind noise compared to onboard audio. It doesn’t isolate voice as aggressively as my Wireless GO II (especially around water), but I still recommend an external mic if you care about audio quality.

Pros

  • +Much better than onboard audio
  • +Handles wind noise really well
  • +Simple on-camera setup for run-and-gun filming

Cons

  • -Not as voice-focused as the Rode Wireless GO II in noisy environments (like near water)

What Tools Tech And Gear says

welcome to tools Tech and gear I'm Seth today I'm opening the Canon M50 Mark II I've had this in the Box for six months and I'm just now getting to it so I'm going to open this up and take a look at its features and I also have the small rig that is designed to fit around this camera and I've got a big SD card to go with it all right let's dive into this box and see what the M50 is all about let's open up this box and see what comes in here so here is a registration card looks like some other advertising a nice user manual here's a registration card as well and then let's go ahead and pop this open here all right have a carrying strap I used to have one of these on my Canon 7D and I use it occasionally but probably won't be using it here for a YouTube camera it's going to be mostly video work and not for photography all right this right here I'm thinking is the kit lens that comes with this here yep it sure is nice to see a cap on both sides definitely appreciate that here is the battery that comes with this camera now I purchased two other batteries because I know I will be going through them pretty quick so there we go well it's actually not as big as I was fearing it would be which is a good thing since I do like to haul my cameras around a lot here on the property before we get to the camera let's also check that there is a wall charger here now this only supports One battery at a time and so I'll have to make sure I'm careful to always have a battery in here to be fully charged that just pops out plugs into the wall and you should be good to go while we're taking a deep dive on the M50 let's go ahead and plug this battery charger up and get a battery charged there we go so there's a little indicator light right here that says charging and down here at the bottom it says full so let's go ahead and let that do its thing let's take a look at this camera this is the EOS M50 Mark II up here on the top it does have a shoe so you can attach either a light or a microphone up there it has an eyepiece back here let's see if that is adjustable in any way they don't feeling I don't think that it is if you go over here this is the metal straps where you can attach that shoulder strap if you need to over here you've got your focus button over here is the dial you can get your presets whether that's the manual the video or any of the other settings for taking pictures shutter button over here this knob can let you adjust different settings has the record button here on off tab right there on this side you're able to pop out the display which is articulating from front to back or even down close that up over here you've got a little dial your autofocus or manual focus you've got the playback menu trash is down or you've got your flash over here info button over here is some more information you can use for viewing your images or videos once you've recorded them if you move over to this side there is a little Wi-Fi button right there a little hard to see if you pop this open you can access your HDMI or your USB on there if you go over here to this side you've got the mic input definitely we'll be using that for my YouTube videos a little door just swings down unless you access that close it up for now over here we should be able to unscrew this and let's see on the bottom you've got battery tab here swings open and this is also where you're going to put your SD card right down in here it has a quarter inch threaded tripod mount thread right there very cool all right let's take a look at the lens as well so this is the Canon 15 to 45 millimeter image stabilizer lens it's just the kit lens that comes with this and let's see we should be able to see the lens right there Canon Zoom close that up let's go ahead and attach this to the camera body itself so I'm going to go ahead and pop this one loose and pop this loose and make that transfer pretty quick as to not get any dust down in here match up the white dot and then snap it into position I probably will not be taking that lens off anytime soon and so that's going to be what it looks like right there and now that we've seen the M50 let's see the small rig that goes with the M50 slide this out of here and go ahead and open this up now I will say that the M50 is not as heavy as the g7x that I've been using which is even the smaller of a camera so this should add a little bit of weight to it but basically this small rig is going to allow for more options to be able to mount things to this and I do enjoy using this kind of thing to hold uh microphones and the like so let's go ahead and see about getting this installed into here so you can see on the bottom it does have a nice open Bay which allows for access to the battery and SD card and then it's going to be able to thread into that quarter inch thread and that's the primary thing that's going to hold this into position there's a magnetic wrench down here that allows you to unthread this if need be nice makes a good solid connection I'll go ahead and get that fully tightened down because I don't anticipate removing this from the small rig anytime soon we'll see if that stays in there or if I lose it over time very cool gives a nice big grip to hold on to still access to the shoe up here is easy enough gives another Mount over here so if you want to have any kind of light you could do that you can also use these quarter inch threaded holes up here for putting more things in there and it also has them on the side on the bottom and on the other side as well so plenty of different options here to extend out things on this camera I like that it gives it more weight and also protects the camera a little bit more for whenever I will be dropping this out in the woods as I have done in the past I purchased a 256 gigabyte card to go with this camera I definitely film a lot of videos between my four different YouTube channels and so I want to be able to basically have plenty of space here to work with so let me open up that battery compartment down there and stick this SD card in here just like that and lock that back into position very cool all right now I'm also going to be installing a rode mic on here but I have to actually do that review first now that we have the basic overview of the Canon M50 out of the way let me get more familiar with this camera over the next week or two I will film some videos do some editing with the footage that's from this camera and try out the various settings and autofocus and once I know all those things I will be back and you and I will walk through the same Adventure again and that way you'll know whether or not this camera is awesome so I installed the rode micro 2 onto the Canon M50 for my initial test here and it seems to have been working well I've actually used this now for right at three weeks and I am pleasantly surprised at how well it has performed a couple of months have passed now and I have to say I am very impressed with the Canon M50 compared to the g7x Mark III the autofocus on this camera is far superior I've also made a few adjustments to the settings to get this thing to perform as I would want so number one I purchased more batteries and that would allow me to film a lot longer because the single battery in here gets you two to three hours of good filming and so I bought two extra batteries I will have those Linked In the description down below if you want to pick those up they're not Canon batteries but they have worked flawlessly here for two months so that's the first thing get more batteries the second thing is that I film in the manual mode so whenever you first turn this on or change any of the settings It'll ask you do you want automatic or manual mode go into the manual that will allow you to set up your ISO settings and your focusing and all the stuff that you want to have in your video so definitely look into that so that's my second recommendation and then the two other things that I have changed that were frustrating at first is the placement of the record button so being a YouTuber I use my camera for recording video for almost everything just a few pictures here and there so the record button being up here on the top is hard to get to so changing the aperture button to the record feature allows me to use gloves whenever it's cold out or be able to quickly just find that button and press it I don't have to Fumble around for the tiny recessed record button here on the camera the next thing I changed here on this camera is next to the eyepiece there is a sensor that whenever you bring your face up to the eyepiece it will darken the screen that's quite annoying whenever you're either in a low light situation or if you just go to move your hand over the screen here and it goes dark so in order to change that I went into the settings and I set that to be off so that it will no longer go dark whenever it's either in a dark room or if you have something covering that eyepiece as far as functionality goes here on this camera I have thoroughly enjoyed it I added the small rig which goes around the camera and it adds a little bit of protection from hitting things on this camera but it also extends the grip significantly so whenever you're walking around this allows you to hold the camera with a bit more grip so if you have bigger hands like I do then that is super handy to have that to better hold on to this camera the rode video micro 2 is what I've got up here and it has done fantastic for wind noise one thing I've noticed is that it's not quite as voice activated as the rode Wireless go-to so whenever I am for instance filming something close to water it will pick up a lot of water noise and not focus quite as much on the uh the voice so but as far as the onboard audio versus the external mic definitely gets you an external mic I will have a link to this in the description down below as well I've only used this one lens on the camera and it has done everything that I need to it has plenty of low light capabilities and has plenty of zoom and focusing so definitely been good as far as auto focus goes spot on this camera has had no issues whatsoever so all in all I'm very happy that I upgraded to the Canon M50 over the Canon g7x Mark III the mark III's autofocus was terrible and just unbearable so the M50 100 worth it I will also leave links for this in the description down below if you want to check it out thank you so much for watching I'm Seth with tools Tech and gear and I will see you in the next video bye
