After posting two videos on the Laguna 1216 lathe, several people asked what the largest bowl is that could be turned on the Laguna 1216 midi lathe. That's a great question, and one that doesn't have a simple answer, because there are several variables; weight, density, species, moisture content. What I've tried to do in this video is provide a solid data point by showing real-time footage, and describing the experience, of turning 25 pound, 14.5" x 4" butternut bowl blank to completion on a Laguna 1216 midi lathe. Bowl turning on a midi lathe can be a fun, rewarding experience, but there are several things that need to be done correctly to have a safe experience that produces a high quality product. I'm hoping that this video gives you a good sense of the capabilities and limitations of a Laguna 1216 when it comes to turning large bowls on the outboard side.
