In this video I’m refreshing two totally different types of outdoor patio furniture—teak wood and metal—and I’m walking you through what actually matters: prep, patience, and choosing the right finish. First up is a teak table and benches that had years of weathering plus an old, uneven gray stain someone else put on (and my clients were not happy with it). Teak naturally turns gray in the sun and wind, and while some people love that patina, I wanted to get this set back as close as possible to the original Arhaus Hamptons finish. That meant hours of sanding (about 7.5 hours total for the table and benches), but I was intentional about not sanding every crevice perfectly smooth so the wood wouldn’t lose its rustic character. Once everything was cleaned (because dust is the enemy of a good finish), I tested three color options so my clients could see the look before I committed: Watco Teak Oil & Stain in Flagstone, Watco in Greystone, and Golden Care Teak Protector in Honey Brown. Greystone was too gray, and Honey Brown felt like it could go too yellow across the whole piece, so we chose Flagstone for that slight gray undertone while still enhancing the natural teak. Then I switched gears to metal chairs that were peeling and bubbling from South Florida heat and rain. I sanded aggressively where needed, taped off the seats, primed, and spray painted in Rust-Oleum Ultra Cover Satin Espresso—lightly sanding and cleaning between coats for the smoothest, most durable finish.
