This week on They’re Just Movies, I sat down with James, David, and Riley to ask the only real question anyone had walking into Avatar: The Way of Water: does anyone actually care… or are we all just here for the Super Ultra Max preset graphics? We get into the big stuff—why the visuals are legitimately insane (especially once we’re in the water), how the underwater mocap and free-diving effort somehow tricks your brain into accepting CGI as “real,” and why the worldbuilding is doing basically all the heavy lifting while the plot drags itself across the finish line. We also argue about what works and what absolutely doesn’t: the self-indulgent intro, the cheap “humans are back, just joking” reset, and how the dialogue has that “bro, this script was written 10 years ago” energy. At the same time, I can’t deny the final action push goes hard—Payakan showing up is a straight-up 10/10 moment, and when Neytiri finally gets to unleash, it’s the movie waking up. My takeaway: it’s visually spiritual, emotionally manipulative in the best way… and still kind of a crappy movie. I landed at a 7/10, James at 6.5/10, and David hit it with the legendary 0.5/10 (while still admitting he liked it).
