HOW TO TEACH A CHILD TO SAY “MAMA” or “DADA!” At Home Speech Therapy Activities for Late Talkers!

Kelli Meyer, Licensed and Certified Pediatric Speech Language Pathologist (M.Ed, CCC-SLP) This video aims to help parents and caregivers prompt their child to "SAY MAMA" or SAY "DADA!" Providing AT HOME SPEECH THERAPY EXERCISES AND ACTIVITIES without giving your child commands! Here's what I know... 1, 2, and 3 year olds don't like to be told what to do... CAN I GET AN AMEN?! Soooo HERE! We RAISE their MOTIVATION to USE the WORD "MAMA" by offering positive reinforcement and attention to whomever is saying it! Then, we also DISCOURAGE behaviors such as hitting, kicking, pulling by hand, falling down, crying, etc by NOT ATTENDING to the behavior and not giving it ANY attention! I use this example in the video, would you go to work if you would get a paycheck for staying home and watching tv?! NOPE! I sure would not! SOOO, your child will likely NOT say "MAMA" or "DADA" until they NEED TO to GET what they WANT or to GAIN their ATTENTION! Make sense? Another example.. Would you go on a diet if you look good without going on one?! NOPE! It's only when we are FRUSTRATED by NOT getting the results we want (lookin like a super model or body builder) that we CHANGE our behavior and DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT that we don't normally do! (I know, kids are SO stinkin smart, RIGHT?!) Try this technique at home to help encourage your child to USE functional words to gain attention and things that they want! PRO TIP: BE ENTHUSIASTIC when working with your child! BE SILLY! BE FUN!
