The perfect gravel psi? My Unbound testing with Silca surprised us both

What is the best gravel tire pressure? Well, it depends... but using a calculator to get you in the right range and then doing a little testing of your own is a good method. On the Unbound Gravel course, I spent a day testing various pressures with Travis Verhoff of Silca. Headed by CEO Josh Poertner, the Silca team has done extensive performance testing with pro athletes across a variety of disciplines and conditions over the years. I had 48mm ENVE Hex tires and Travis had 2.2in Continental Race Kings. To tease out a quantification of rolling resistance at various pressures, Travis used the Chung Method on Golden Cheetah software to analyze our data. The inputs were power, speed, distance, elevation, air density, rider + bike weight, and an estimated CdA. We were both surprised by the findings on the mushiest of the gravel surfaces!
