In previous videos I have shown that the Apple Watch Ultra is one of the most accurate heart rate trackers out there. However, this is based on the heart rate you see in the Health App after you complete your workout. The problem I noticed is the live heart rate you can see on the screen of the Apple Watch Ultra. Just looking at it while I was training, I felt it did not match exactly with the heart rate recorded by an ECG chest strap, and it even seemed different from the heart rate I saw in the Apple Health app afterwards. The heart rate in the Health App might have been processed further, and be different from the live heart rate shown on screen. So, in this video I am going to use a bunch of computer code, data science, image recognition and two GoPro’s to figure out if there are any issues with the live heart rate tracking of the Apple Watch Ultra. What I found is likely not going to be an issue for most people, but it will be for some. I have had the Apple Watch Ultra for about 4 months now, and it is an amazing piece of technology. In many of the tests I shared with you we saw that the Apple Watch Ultra is one of the best heart rate trackers that is currently on the market. As far as I know, everyone that has tested the heart rate tracking accuracy of the Apple Watch Ultra relies on the data that is recorded in the Apple Health app, or another connected app like Strava, which is connected to the Health app. I also use this data in all of my testing, and this is the data that the extremely positive reviews I shared with you are based on. However, I recently noticed while I was on my spinning bike that the heart rate my ECG chest strap reported did not agree as well with the heart rate reported on the screen of the Apple Watch Ultra as I expected. So, I started thinking; It could be that the raw heart rate signals detected by the Apple Watch Ultra are re-processed in the Health App, giving the better final accuracy, or it could also be that there is some delay in the live heart rate shown by the Apple Watch. So, I decided to dig in deeper, and investigate what is going on here.
