Birdbox Records’ Space, Light, Color – Acoustic Workshop, Volume 1 is one of the more unusual and fascinating audiophile releases I’ve encountered in some time. Originally recorded in 2002 at the Museo di Cassero in Monte San Savino, Italy by recording engineer Massimo Piantini of Max Research Studio, the project was later revisited by Lorenzo Vella of Birdbox Records and Nightingale Studios through an analog mastering process involving transfer to half-inch tape and a vintage analog chain—an approach described by the label as an “alchemical” meeting of digital precision and analog dimensionality. The result is a beautifully spacious trio recording presented here as a 45 RPM release from Birdbox Records and Blue Moon Records. In this video, I take a closer look at the recording, the mastering approach developed at Nightingale Studios, and the listening experience. This record is a single disc 45rpm presentation.
