This is not a full comparison—at least not yet. In this video, I take a first look at the new Definitive Sound Series One-Step release of Pet Sounds, and more importantly, the story behind it. For years, collectors have pointed to a 1972 reissue—originally part of the Carl and the Passions twofer—as one of the best-sounding versions of this album. That pressing was cut at Artisan and has developed a quiet reputation for its depth, balance, and what many describe as a kind of “3D mono” presentation. What makes this new One-Step especially interesting is the source. According to the reissue producer, the tapes used for that 1972 pressing were located in the archive after decades of little to no use—and they appear to match the original cutting source used for that release. In this video, I walk through that discovery, what it might mean for this new pressing, and share some early listening impressions from the test pressing. Full comparisons with other versions—including Analogue Productions and DCC—will follow. If this truly reflects that 1972 lineage, this could become one of the most important reissues of Pet Sounds we’ve seen.
