Gentle Giant’s Octopus has been part of my musical life since the 1970s, but hearing an original UK Vertigo pressing on my current system revealed dimensions of the album I had never fully appreciated before. In this video, I share my personal history with the album, discuss the unique musical world Gentle Giant created, compare an original UK Vertigo pressing with the Alucard reissue, and explain why this recording has become one of the most memorable listening experiences I’ve had in recent years. Released in 1972, Octopus remains one of progressive rock’s most inventive and enduring achievements. For me, this was one of those rare occasions where a legendary pressing not only lived up to its reputation—it deepened my appreciation for the music itself. These files were captured by my associate Oswaldo Martinez of Let There Be Sound.
