The former England international and veteran of more than 600 league appearances discusses his progression through the ranks at Palace, as well as the experience he gained by dropping down the divisions to sign with Southend United – a move that allowed him to develop while helping the club earn the second of their back-to-back promotions into the second tier of English football. That ultimately led him to Derby County, where he played under Jim Smith and his assistant, future England manager Steve McClaren.
