Belaying - assisted braking devices

Climbing Nomads The Big Depot Leeds put on a free workshop for climbers to try out a variety of different assisted braking devices including the Black Diamond Pilot, Edelrid Jul 2, Petzl Gri Gri Plus and the Climbing Technology Click Up. We were invited to pop along to watch and film the workshop in action, and try out some of the belay devices to see how they all compare to each other (and which one might make it into our climbing racks). A chilled out workshop, where the Big Depot staff were on hand to give tips and advice on how to use the alien looking devices. A great evening workshop, and hopefully more of them to come! Is it maybe time for the UK to follow the growing trend in other countries, to make the use of an assisted braking device mandatory whilst belaying at indoor climbing walls? The statistics speak for themselves, with a huge reduction in the number of ground fall incidents at walls where assisted braking devices are required........
