This tarp includes10 guy out points, is constructed from durable ripstop nylon and coated with a combination of polyurethane and silicon. What I like most about this tarp is how versatile it is for using when backpacking with large groups of people — it can be used a hammock shelter, cook tent, for extra storage, or a combination of all. What I don’t care for about this tarp is how heavy it is for backpacking, weighing in at 1.4 lbs. ---- 👉 #2: Best Budget Tarp: Paria Outdoors Sanctuary SilTarp https://amzn.to/3wyC9Ms For an ultralight option that costs under $80, you’d be hard pressed to find a better quality alternative. This tarp features 12 guy out points, high quality Dyneema guylines, and comes with six aluminum alloy stakes. The fabric is made from 30-denier ripstop nylon and coated with dual polyurethane/silicon materials, making it highly effective at keeping out inclement weather. What I like most about the Sanctuary is how lightweight it is for such an affordable tarp, weighing in at 20.5 oz total. What I don’t care for about this tarp is how small of an area it covers. With a 10’ by 8’ coverage space, it is a tarp best suited for a solo backpacker or maybe two people, if you're okay with squeezing in and getting cozy. ---- 👉 #3: Best Minimalist Tarp: REI Co-op Quarter Dome SL https://alnk.to/2FuL4Q9 If you’re looking for a tarp with all the important features and none of the extra bells and whistles, keep this option in mind. This tarp features a square design that can be setup in multiple convenient configurations. If all you want to carry in your pack is this tarp you will find a way to stay comfortable in any condition. You can set it up using trekking poles, sticks, or whatever else on the trail that sparks your creativity. What I love most about the Quarter Dome SL is that it compresses down to a size smaller than a 16oz water bottle. What I don’t care for about this tarp is that the ripstop nylon is coated with polyurethane alone, making it a less durable option in inclement weather than the others we’ve listed above. It’s also a bit pricey for my taste at $150 — only $20 less than our overall pick. ---- 👉 #4: Best For Foul Weather: Hyperlite Mountain Gear Echo 2 Catenary Cut Tarp https://alnk.to/flpjHAS The Echo 2 features an intuitively tight cut sealed ridgeline and double reinforced guy out points. You can pitch it an endless variety of configurations using trekking poles, trees, and other natural features. What I covet most about this tarp is that it provides for nearly 70 square feet of coverage while weighing in at less than a glass of water. What I don’t care for about this product is how pricey it is at $325, making it an investment really designed for the most dedicated backpackers. ---- 👉 #5: Best For Thru Hikers: Sea to Summit Escapist https://alnk.to/1XPJ9ED The Sea to Summit Escapist features waterproof treated nylon, individual guy out points designed to hold trekking poles, and reflective guy lines that prevent you from tripping when you embark on those inevitable midnight bathroom runs. What I like most about this tarp is that it weighs in at 9.5 ounces — making it the lightest option on this list. What I don’t care for about this tarp is that it is a bit of a pain to set up given the eight stakes and two trekking poles required to anchor it.
