We’ve been in Australia for over FIVE weeks, running full throttle to prepare our Selene Yachts Classic 49 for an epic long-range ocean crossing. This voyage will take us from Australia to Fiji, across the South Pacific islands, and ultimately back to the United States. This week, we’re incredibly fortunate to have Dylan from Selene Yachts Americas aboard. Dylan isn’t just the head engineer for Selene Yachts in North America — he’s also become a dear friend. Having his expertise onboard has been invaluable as we push this trawler to its limits. Together, Dylan and I put the boat through the wringer — running emergency drills, testing redundancies, intentionally stressing systems, and learning exactly what to do when things go wrong at sea. This is the kind of preparation required for serious bluewater passagemaking. After days and days of boat work we finally were ready to set off for some testing. It's been weeks tied to the dock, and we finally got underway for some much-needed seat time and accurate fuel burn testing. But the day didn’t go exactly as planned… a problem emerged that forced us to deploy the emergency Yanmar wing engine — something you never want to use, but absolutely must be ready for.
