Hurricane Erin Forces a Change of Plans | Cruising Acadia, Bar Harbor & Belfast Maine Our cruising plans were set — from Acadia National Park / Bar Harbor to Nova Scotia, Canada, where we hoped to check off our third country of exploration. But Hurricane Erin had other plans… 🌪️ After a few peaceful days anchored in Somes Sound aboard our Nordhavn N41 trawler, we made the short passage to Northeast Harbor, Maine. Tucked between Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor, this quiet harbor offers incredible hiking trails, charming shops, and solid hurricane protection — the perfect spot to wait out a potential storm. Here, we reunited with our friends Steve & Cristen aboard their Nordhavn 76. To our surprise, Steve had two BMW adventure motorcycles onboard — and it didn’t take much convincing before Lindsey and I were riding through Acadia National Park! From Bar Harbor to Cadillac Mountain, blowholes, lighthouses, beaches, and even a classic car museum, it was an unforgettable way to explore Mount Desert Island. But then, two big curveballs hit: ⚠️ A large chunk of missing bottom paint on our N41’s bow that needed immediate repair ⚠️ A forecast calling for 12+ foot seas if Hurricane Erin didn’t weaken With those threats looming, we made the tough decision to change course — heading south to Front Street Shipyard in Belfast, Maine for a haul-out. Not only could we address the bottom paint, but being “on the hard” gave us peace of mind as Hurricane Erin approached.
