Today I’m selling my Tesla Model X while I wait for my new Model Y Performance, so I used the moment to walk you through the must-do checklist I follow before handing a Tesla to the next owner. These steps are easy, but they matter because your Tesla isn’t just a car—it’s tied to your identity, location history, subscriptions, garage access (HomeLink), driver profiles, phone keys, and your Tesla app. If you skip something, you can leave behind personal data or even payment connections. In the video I show Step 1: how to factory reset (Controls > Service > Factory Reset), and I explain why you’ll need to enter your Tesla account credentials. I also call out something I noticed after resetting: some items like key cards and Bluetooth settings can still appear, so I manually removed them. Step 2 is removing (or transferring) the vehicle from the Tesla app—menu > My Products > select vehicle > Remove/Transfer Ownership—because that disconnects your account and cancels paid subscriptions like FSD or Premium Connectivity, and it helps ensure future Supercharging isn’t tied to your payment method. My final review is simple: factory reset first, then remove from the app, then double-check profiles, HomeLink, and phone keys, and do a thorough sweep of the car (under seats, glove box, sub trunks) so nothing gets left behind.
