All rights reserved. - Maurice Ravel (1875-1937), a key figure of the French school in the early 20th century, composed La Valse in 1919-1920 (M. 72). Conceived as a ballet and a tribute to the Viennese waltz, the work is a symphonic poem with a choreographic purpose. However, the piece is also widely understood as a powerful reflection on the collapse of the pre-WWI European world, with its dramatic tension mirroring the violent end of an era. Ravel himself described the work as a "choreographic poem," presenting a dramatic and gradually intensifying disintegration of the waltz form, which he said was a "crescendo of sonority" [un crescendo de sonorité]. It premiered on December 12, 1920, and was originally intended as a companion piece to Ravel's Valses nobles et sentimentales (1911). In 1920, Ravel transcribed La Valse for piano, and this version gained a life of its own in the concert repertoire. Today, we are proud to present an early recording of Maximianno Cobra from 1988 performing this monumental piano transcription. Made in Rio de Janeiro, this recording captures a pivotal moment in the artist’s career, taking place approximately one year before his departure to study conducting at the University of Music and Performing Arts - Vienna (Former name: Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien). Having begun his piano studies at the age of five, Cobra was at the peak of his mastery in the late 1980s, commanding a vast repertoire of sonatas and piano concertos while simultaneously advancing his training in conducting and composition. His performance of La Valse not only captures the dramatic power of Ravel's vision but is distinguished by its treatment of the dance tempo, remaining faithful to Ravel’s indication: “Mouvement de Valse viennoise.” This performance offers a rare glimpse into the early artistic career of a musician who would go on to achieve international acclaim.
