The composer Franz Liszt (born Raiding, Hungary, on October 22, 1811; died Bayreuth, Germany, 1886) wrote Un Sospiro (Italian for 'A Sigh' or 'A Breath') as the third of his three Concert Études (S.144). These études were composed around 1848–1849 during Liszt's pivotal Weimar period, a time when he had retired from his virtuoso concert tours to focus on composition and conducting. The set, originally published in 1849 under the title Trois caprices poétiques, was later republished with the title Trois études de concert (Three Concert Études). Although the individual titles (Il lamento, La leggierezza, Un sospiro) were added later, Un Sospiro has become inextricably linked to its evocative title, capturing a moment of profound, romantic expressiveness. The work is dedicated to Liszt's pupil and future son-in-law, Hans von Bülow (1830–1894), reflecting Liszt's growing role as a master teacher and mentor. The composition of the Concert Études precedes the more technically formidable Transcendental Études (S.139, published 1852), but Un Sospiro nonetheless presents unique technical challenges packaged within a highly poetic form.
