The composer Franz Liszt (born Raiding, Hungary, on October 22, 1811; died Bayreuth, Germany, 1886), a Hungarian virtuoso pianist and figurehead of the New German School, created his set of three solo piano "Nocturnes", Liebesträume (German for 'Dreams of Love'), S.541, which were published in 1850. These pieces originated as three Lieder (songs) for high voice and piano, which Liszt had composed earlier, around 1845. The set, dedicated to Liszt's long-time companion Princess Carolyne zu Sayn-Wittgenstein, marks a period in his life when he had retired from the touring virtuoso circuit to focus on conducting and composition in Weimar, beginning in 1848. This shift allowed him to produce many of his most significant works, placing the Liebesträume firmly within his pivotal Weimar period. The three "Nocturnes", which explore different facets of love, are based on poems by German writers: the first two utilise verses by Ludwig Uhland (1787–1862), while the third and most famous, in A-flat major, is set to the poem "O lieb, so lang du lieben kannst" ("O love, as long as you can love") by Ferdinand Freiligrath (1810–1876). The publication of both the song versions (S.298) and the piano transcriptions (S.541) simultaneously in 1850 reflects Liszt’s characteristic interest in transcription, adapting vocal lyricism for the piano. The third nocturne’s subject of unconditional, enduring love, and the melancholic warning of its eventual loss, strongly aligns with the emotive and expressive ideals of the Romantic era.
