In this video, I sat down with Anjali (a software engineer in big tech) to answer the question everyone keeps asking: will AI replace software engineers or data scientists… or is it mostly fear-mongering? We broke it down into three core skill areas—coding, design, and soft skills—because “your job” is not just typing code. Yes, tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot can write SQL, Python, and starter snippets fast, and they’re amazing for getting you off a blank screen. But the moment you need complex logic, real product context, or you’re operating inside messy constraints, AI starts to fall apart unless you know exactly what to ask for and how to validate the output. We also talked about what’s actually left when AI automates a big chunk of execution: system design (for engineers), critical thinking + domain context (for data scientists), and communication/storytelling (for both). I shared how I use Gemini in Colab to draft code and even write a first-pass one-pager from tables—then I take over, sanity-check it, and present it, because that’s where the real job is. My takeaway: coding gets automated first, design is much harder, and soft skills are still the most “human.” Your job won’t disappear overnight, but it will evolve—so build the skills that make you irreplaceable.
