But Győr is much more than just a pretty riverside city. It has a long history, from ancient settlements and Roman times to its important role as a fortress city protecting Hungary from Ottoman expansion. During our visit, we explore the old town, walk through the narrow Baroque streets, visit the shores of the Rába, climb up to the Püspökvár Tower for one of the best views of the city, and step inside the Basilica of Győr, where we also see the important Szent László relic. Győr is a fantastic day trip destination in Hungary, especially if you enjoy history, architecture, peaceful streets, river views and cities that are easy to explore on foot.
