I feel like a common thread with a lot of Home Assistant users is the urge to collect data… and then actually see it in a way that isn’t trapped in a dashboard on a phone or a monitor. In this video I show how I’m using WLED + Home Assistant to turn real-time smart home sensor data into “living” LED art on a WS2812B matrix. Once you connect a WLED instance to Home Assistant, you can start mapping numbers like temperature, power draw, wind gusts, or even boiler output directly into animation speed, intensity, and direction. I walk through the hardware build (frame, plexi, matrix, and a little cardboard border hack to get a clean edge-to-edge look) and why I think the MagWLED-1 controller is basically the easiest on-ramp into WLED—USB-C power, quick setup, and you’re off. Then I jump into the Home Assistant side: high-frequency triggers, simple templates to avoid re-applying the same preset, and using service calls to set WLED preset, speed, and intensity based on live sensor values. The big takeaway is that this is both fun and functional—your home can literally “broadcast” what it’s doing, locally, in a way that’s privacy-first and genuinely useful.
