In this video I’m taking something old-school that’s basically obsolete in most houses—an analog landline phone—and giving it new tricks with Home Assistant. The core idea is simple: with a VoIP adapter (I’m using the Grandstream HT801) and your router, Home Assistant can detect the box on your network, you pair it to your Assist pipeline, and suddenly that retro handset becomes a direct line to your smart home. It’s a fun party trick, sure, but it’s also genuinely useful when you want alerts and voice interactions without relying on cloud mics everywhere. I demo how this can go beyond basic announcements into AI-powered automations: Home Assistant can call the phone with reminders (like trash day), urgent warnings (like a severe thunderstorm alert), and even have a back-and-forth conversation where it explains what it’s seeing—like inferring someone’s showering based on hot water production, lights, and humidity. I keep the setup portion intentionally straightforward here, and I’ll be putting out a longer step-by-step for the more advanced AI pieces. The takeaway: a couple small hardware pieces plus Home Assistant can turn a retro phone into a privacy-first, local-friendly notification and control endpoint.
