According to the National Kidney Foundation, about 26 million Americans have chronic kidney disease, and over 100,000 are still waiting for a donor. This was Scott Scannell’s story until one Christmas, as he says, his “living angel” Ann Marie saved his life through Stony Brook’s Living Donor Program. Living donations are crucial and are increasingly becoming an important option for patients, as the wait time for a deceased donor can average three to seven years. Scott’s success story is one of many at Stony Brook. Our Kidney Transplant team has performed over 2,000 transplants and just over 630 transplants have been through living donors. With altruistic donors like Ann Marie, that number continues to grow. https://www.stonybrookmedicine.edu/patientcare/transplant/livingdonor
