Paige Glennerster, who’d had heart valve surgery two years earlier, had just been diagnosed with bacteremia—a blood infection—which soon made its way to her heart. The combination of a heart infection and her underlying valve vulnerability had doctors advising Paige that, terrifyingly, the odds of her surviving the surgery she would need were so slim, they would not operate. Surgeons at Stony Brook Heart Institute disagreed, though. Successfully performing a complicated almost 12 hours of valve reconstructive procedures, Paige is today, thriving. “Simply put,” shares Paige, “the amazing Stony Brook surgeons and their skilled teams gave my life back to me.”
