Eric’s Story: Life-Saving Care for a Rare Birth Defect at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital

Shortly following baby Eric’s birth, his parents learned he had a rare and life-threatening birth defect called EA/TEF—a condition requiring immediate medical attention. EA/TEF or esophageal atresia (EA) and tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) is a dangerous condition. EA means the esophagus isn’t properly formed into a complete tube, preventing food from reaching the stomach. TEF is an abnormal connection between the esophagus and the trachea (windpipe), which can cause breathing and feeding difficulties. Thanks to the swift intervention and around-the-clock care from the pediatric surgery and NICU teams at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, Eric’s life was saved.
