More Information: http://www.northcountydentists.com --------------------------------------------------------- Toothbrush & Floss Video Content: Welcome to San Diego Dentistry a youtube channel dedicated to dental education. my name is Dr. Shahhal and today’s topic is oral hygiene. Every day we take time out of our hectic schedules to clean our teeth. Toothbrush, floss & other dental materials help prevent harmful oral bacteria, bad breathe & dental staining. However, theres a lot of misinformation out there regarding how to brush & floss correctly. In every household you can find a toothbrush. Toothbrushes come in many sizes, shapes & forms. . . some are power driven & some are not. Both types are recommended as long as you use the correct technique When using a toothbrush, it is essential to clean all surfaces of your teeth. The toothbrush should be positioned at a 45 degree angle between your gums & teeth since this is an interface where bacteria can proliferate easily. Please take some time to brush around the entire tooth since there are many grooves and pits on the surfaces of your teeth. Don’t forget the areas closest to your tongue. Saliva can cause calcification which makes it harder to maintain a clean surface. It is typically recommended that you spend 2 minutes brushing in the morning and immediately before bed. Excellent brushing habits take time but it is a worthwhile investment that is essential for a beautiful smile. While the toothbrush cleans around your teeth, flossing cleans in between. The vast majority of our teeth come into contact with one another. These contact areas cannot be cleaned effectively with the toothbrush alone. A thin piece of floss allows you to reach into these tight areas & clean out any remaining food particles. Wrap the floss around your middle fingers which will allow your index fingers to easily manipulate the floss. Most people floss quickly going between each contact. However, take some time to create a “C” shape around each tooth & pull outwards. This motion will keep the area between your teeth clean. Flossing & brushing together are essential for quality oral hygiene. I hope you use this video as a tool the next time you clean your teeth. Make sure to join us next time for a video on other dental instruments including the inter proximal brush & rubber tip.
