In this video I’m putting modern locking folders up against what I actually carry and use day to day: slipjoints, Swiss Army knives, and classic jack knives. Modern folders are brilliant bits of kit, but I think a lot of them are missing the point for real-world carry—especially here in the UK. I go through the stuff that matters when you’re not just playing with a flipper at your desk: laws, social acceptability, and the kind of utility you reach for ten times a day. I also talk about reliability and safety in the real world—how “walk and talk” on a good traditional knife tells you a lot, and how plenty of accidents come from misuse rather than the knife not having a lock. Then we get into longevity and value: maintenance, what actually lasts, and why traditional patterns often make more sense if you’re collecting as well as carrying. I finish with what I’m carrying right now, and my recommendation for the one traditional pattern I genuinely think every modern folder fan should try at least once.
