The Fosi Audio DS3 is a $100 portable dongle DAC/amp that surprised me with how solid it sounds—mostly neutral with a touch of treble heat depending on the gear. For gaming, the hardware 7.1 and especially the FPS mode are the real story here, and the FPS implementation is one of the best I’ve heard without wrecking the rest of the audio.

Pros

  • +Great sound quality for a $100 dongle; doesn’t degrade my IEMs/headphones
  • +Excellent FPS mode implementation that enhances details without making everything else dull
  • +7.1 mode adds immersion and a bigger sense of space in games
  • +Solid CNC aluminum build with tactile buttons; very compact and lightweight
  • +Handles sensitive IEMs well with no noticeable noise floor in my testing
  • +Balanced 4.4mm output with up to 220mW for decent drive in many use cases

Cons

  • -No CTIA mic passthrough on 3.5mm, which is a big drawback for gaming headsets
  • -EQ requires UAC 1.0 and a browser-based tool; mobile access was unreliable for me
  • -Switching UAC modes requires holding a button while plugging in (clunky)
  • -High-gain mode uses flashing LEDs, which I found distracting
  • -Very lightweight for desktop use; can move around easily when plugging/unplugging
