The Audeze LCD S20 is a $500 closed-back planar that’s built like a tank, with strong isolation and an easy-to-drive 18 ohm load. For my taste it wasn’t very lively or exciting (especially for gaming), but I can see it making sense as a studio/reference-style headphone—possibly with a little EQ depending on what you’re hearing.

Pros

  • +Excellent, robust build for the price (magnesium/aluminum/steel)
  • +Good isolation for a closed-back
  • +Easy to drive across dongles and amps
  • +Comfortable fit with reasonable clamp and good cup tilt/swivel
  • +Magnetic pads make pad swaps easy

Cons

  • -Not very lively or engaging to my ears
  • -2–3k region can sound a bit “off” (noticed on my vocals)
  • -Intimate staging; not wide/open sounding
  • -Gaming impact (explosions/dialogue) felt flat
  • -Box contents are minimal (no case)
