I tested Antlion’s XLR Adapter specifically with the ModMic 5 to see if it actually improves fidelity and proximity behavior. The biggest real-world upgrade for me was on PC: it needs less gain to hit good levels and the noise floor is noticeably better when you run it into an interface.
Pros
- +Noticeably less gain needed to reach peak levels
- +Cleaner audio on PC setups due to reduced internal noise
- +More flexibility with interfaces/mixers for streamers
Cons
- -Not a big difference when recording raw into a camera
- -Proximity compensation is only a slight improvement; bass boost/distortion can still happen
- -A bit pricey for an adapter at $24.95
