First sign is your thermostat "reads" a temperature indoors that is warmer than what you have set. For example, the thermostat may read 80 degrees, and you have it set at 77 degrees. The second sign, is the outdoor unit fan is running, but the air that is coming up from the top of the unit is not hot at all. This is an indication that the compressor itself, is not engaging. The third sign, is that the outdoor unit is making a buzzing or humming sound intermittently every few minutes or so. SAFETY FIRST! Make absolutely sure, that your power to the outdoor unit is COMPLETELY AND SAFELY shut off! If you are not sure about this, turn off all breakers, including the main, as it is better to turn off all the power, than to get electrocuted by 220 volts! DO NOT touch the capacitor terminals of capacitor being removed until you SAFELY de-energize the capacitor! Better safe than sorry!
