Every year, millions of people get sick of Windows and go hunting for a “normal person” OS that doesn’t nickel-and-dime them. And the same name keeps popping up everywhere: Linux Mint. Free, stable, no subscriptions, no telemetry — on paper it looks too clean to be real. So I did what most reviewers don’t: I dug into the developer blog posts, package repositories, community forums, and the public donation records to see what’s actually going on under the hood. Mint really does nail the basics: Cinnamon feels familiar, it runs lean, and setup is painless. But it’s also three layers deep — Mint on Ubuntu on Debian — which means when upstream breaks, Mint inherits the damage. I break down the Mint 21.3 to Mint 22 upgrade path collapse (package conflicts upstream, Samba and LibreOffice right in the blast radius), plus the PipeWire rollout that turned into an audio dumpster fire for some users (HDMI crackling, dummy output, sound dying mid-Zoom).
