I asked Silverstone to send one of these over so I could test it with the multigigabit EnGnius switch I recently reviewed. The ECL01 is a 2.5 gigabit capable add on card for upgrading your older gaming or workstation pcs. 2.5gig nics are becoming more common but are mostly only offered on the bleeding edge or higher end motherboards right now. If you’re gaming on an older but still capable system that only has gigabit networking, the ECL01 is a good choice for 2.5gig connectivity. In my setup, I’m frequently transferring large media files, linux isos if you will, and have found that my bottleneck was the network capability. On my main PC I have a PCIe NVMe ssd which is way more than capable of maxing out a 1gbps nic. On my storage servers, I have cache devices that are also PCIe NVMe. This means my network transfer speeds are capped at just over 100 to 110 megabytes per second. I recently reviewed an EnGenius ECS2512 switch which had multigigabit 2.5 capable copper ports. I used the Silverstone ECL01 on my test PC in order to test copies and writes to and from my storage server with the nvme cache drives. The speed increase was awesome. Sure it’s not 10gig but the 2.5 gigabit per second stand allows you to reuse most in place cabling as long as its cat 5e or better and the cables weren’t poorly made. 10gig usually requires more expensive switches and can often mean recabling your devices. So in terms of complexity, I only had to install the nic and the driver then connect it to my switch with existing cabling in order to get a boost in networking of up to 260-270 megabytes per second. Pro tip though, download the latest realtek RTL8125BG-CG driver before you power your PC down to install the card. The ECL01 does have that small LED header on it so you can connect your case's NIC LEDs directly to your new network card so you can still see the Network activity lights. Since the ECL01 utilizes the Realtek RTL8125GB-CG controller, you can download and install the Realtek Dragon Feature qos software. In the Dragon feature software you can assign priority to different apps to help optimize your experience. In my Use-case, I didn't need this but it is an option and as of this time of this video at least, it's free to download and use. Looking for parts?
