I bought this motherboard for a few different types of tests with my Intel 14700K CPU. The Z790 Gaming X AX is a solid mid range motherboard choice in my opinion, we have tons of IO on this board’s back panel, 4x USB 2.02 type A ports, 2x SMA antenna ports for the AX wireless support, 2x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type A ports, those are in red, 3x USB 3.2 Gen 1 type A ports, 1x USB-C port with USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 support, an optical audio port, 2 audio jacks, we have a 2.6gbps Realtek network controller, and lastly, we have the integrated video outputs, 1 display port and 1 HDMI 2.0 port. AS for PCI express slot expansion, we have one main PCIe x16 5.0 slot, generally this will be for your graphics card. Then we have two PCIe x16 slots connected to the chipset, PCIe number 4, 1 will run at PCIe 4.0 speeds in the x4 hardware mode. The PCIe slot number 4-2 will run at PCIe 3.0 x4 mode. I think generally speaking this will probably be plenty for most gamers and people who will use this as a budget workstation. AS for the storage options, by default we have 6 SATA ports connected to the chipset. There's 2 M.2 slots connected to the chipset as well, the top two slots under the M.2 heatsink and 1 more M.2 which supports either PCIe NVME or SATA SSDs but if you need to use this very bottom slot, it seems like it will turn off 2 of your 6 SATA ports. That’s not a big downside in my opinion, that’s plenty of storage connectivity for many different use cases. The chipset connected NVME and SATA ports do support RAID 0,1,5, and 10 if you need it but my suggestion is to always build a network attached storage device if you really need some kind of raid functionality.
