Heat. Heat. That pretty much set the tone for this scouting run. After fueling up in Bailey, Colorado, I headed south on 285 with one goal: find fresh locations for future camping and overlanding videos. On the drive I spotted Antero Reservoir (Park County) and had to pull in. It’s a well-known spot for Colorado fishing, open year-round for boating and fishing, and it’s got plenty of campsites if you want an easy overnight basecamp with big South Park views. From there I kept pushing south and started poking around the Rocky Mountain area east of Nathrop, near the Arkansas River. There’s a ton of opportunity out there—camping, fishing, and some killer scenery—but I also make the call to turn around about a quarter mile up a rougher trail. In a full-size pickup, I’m not gambling on what’s ahead without knowing the line, so I’ll be back with the Jeeps or the ATVs to really explore those trails. To wrap it up, I crossed back west toward St. Elmo. Even with snowed-up trails, we found one accessible route, and the views plus the mining history make it straight-up untouched filming gold.
