About This Video

In this video I’m sharing a Procreate portrait timelapse and walking you through my actual drawing process from start to finish. I start by lowering my background color to a gray tone because drawing on pure white throws my eyes off—seriously, it changes how you see color. I wanted the vibe to be “someone in a car” (I don’t know why, I just love car photos), and I used this piece to practice lighting and adding a background—something I’m still kind of stumbling into, but I’m really enjoying. As I’m shading the face, I talk about how important it is to lock in your light source first, because that’s what sets the tone for the whole drawing. I also challenged myself to keep it more minimalist: not over-rendering every detail, especially in the hair. Normally I’ll draw a ton of strands, but here I kept it simpler and I actually love how it adds depth and lets your brain fill in the rest. The whole piece took me exactly 1 hour and 30 minutes (I had a timer right next to me), and I finished with five minutes to spare—which is wild for me because I can easily take four hours. If you like these process-style timelapses, let me know and I’ll make more.
