As mountain bike drivetrains went from multiple to a single chainring up front and 29ers took over, larger gear range became a necessity. At the same time as this range increased, the number of gears on the hub did too, ultimately settling in at 12 speeds. Over the years I've ridden a lot of these 12 speed drivetrains, but have also been putting in a lot of time on a 9 speed from Box with a 50t cog on the back. I've been mostly happy with that set up, but it got me thinking: do we all have too many gears on our bikes? Want To Support Me And Look Cool Doing It?
