They use heat and compression to raise the temperature deep in your muscle tissues to increase blood flow, reduce muscle tension for better flexibility and improved mobility which reduces your chances of injury and recovery times. The boots are sized in ranges so be sure to get the boot size that’s right for you. The boots themselves are quite large and chunky at nearly 4 lbs, and they may feel oversized versus your typical sneaker, though keep in mind that these are not footwear you’ll want to walk outside or train in. Most of the bulk and weight come from the electronics housed in the sole and each boot has its own control panel on the inside of each heel. From back to front you have the battery/charge indicator LED, power button, compression level indicator LEDs, compression level mode button, heat level indicators, heat level mode button, start/stop indicator, and start/stop button. The USB-C port for charging is located just under the control panel and charging the boots fully can take up to 6 hours. The included adapter has swappable plugs, you can change the plug head when travelling internationally. You can charge both shoes simultaneously. Each boot has two Velcro straps across the front and a main entry flap which opens the shoe to about mid-foot making it super easy to put these on. You’ll want the shoes to feel secure and comfortable and not overly tight when wearing calf length socks that rise above the top of the boot; this not only protects your skin from abrasion and direct heat but also keeps the interior of the boot cleaner. Use the controls to select the heat and or compression level you want, from off up to level 3 for each, before pressing the start button. Changing the setting on one side automatically changes the setting on the second shoe for a balanced session and automatically shuts off after 15 minutes. On a full charge, it’ll last anywhere from 1-1.5 hours of use depending on heat and compression levels used. You can also use the Hyperice smartphone app to connect with the boots over Bluetooth and and you’ll find the same 3 levels for heat and compression in the ‘Levels’ menu, while ‘Custom’ has additional discrete increments with 9 choices for heat and 15 for compression. Both show the remaining nbattery life and time left in the session during use, and you can extend or reduce the time with a 10-minute minimum and 15-minute maximum. These are a rocker style shoe, so that means it has a rounded, sloped heel that lets you gently roll your foot forward, making a shoe of this size and weight much easier to move around. I like that its mobile in that sense that I can still go about my warm up routine and get around while using them rather than having to sit or lay stationary somewhere. The levels of compression are decent with the highest at 210 mmHg being pretty intense so it’s best to start at the lowest setting and work your way up for what you can handle. The same goes for the heat which starts at 111°F (or 44°C) and tops out at 125°F (or 52°C). I will say though that both feel kind of great. If you like deep tissue or foot massages and saunas, you’ll probably really enjoy the amount of pressure and heat delivered. Just note that the heat doesn’t extend all the way to the end of the foot and is focused mainly around the Achilles, heel, and ankle. After use I could really tell the difference in how loose and flexible my ankles, heels, and feet felt. For athletes and folks who train regularly, this could shave a decent chunk of time off a regular warm-up routine, or help you stay warmed up between plays. As for recovery, these helped mitigate some of the aches and soreness from prolonged and strenuous activity like running and sprinting for quicker recovery. Overall, if you are an athlete and love integrating new tech into your routines that can help you perform or recover better and faster, the Hyperboots may be right up your alley. At $900 a pair, they’re not the most affordable footwear, but they are really cool and futuristic looking. If the functionality that they deliver is something you think you’ll use regularly, that in and of itself might be worth the price tag.
